Frequently Asked Questions
What is Astaxanthin?
Astaxanthin belongs to the group of carotenoids, red pigments, and is currently considered one of the strongest antioxidants in the world. It is not for nothing that he is often crowned the king of antioxidants, the list of his health benefits and the scientific studies that examine them counts hundreds of items.
Although it can be found in the flesh of wild salmon, lobster or shrimp (the common denominator is the characteristic orange colour caused by the presence of astaxanthin), the most commonly used form are dietary supplements. The quality ones are made from the natural alga Haematococcus pluvialis, which is grown in special conditions for the production of these supplements. Although a varied healthy diet must be followed, dietary supplements with astaxanthin are the right choice to help the body fight harmful free radicals. At the same time, they are also the most economical solution with regard to current prices and the availability of quality fish, shrimp and lobster meat.
What are free radicals and antioxidants?
Free radicals are highly reactive particles that are formed in our body by external and internal influences. The most common of these are polluted environment, sunlight, stress, poor lifestyle, lack or, conversely, an excess of physical activity.Large amounts of free radicals cause oxidative stress, which damages cells, tissues and entire organs. It is the cause of many diseases - cancer, heart attack and other cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, lung disease, stroke, Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease, oxidative stress also causes infertility, inflammation or immune disorders.
Due to these factors, most of us have too many free radicals in the body, for which the natural mechanism of the body is no longer sufficient. Free oxygen radicals are unstable molecules that lack one electron, which they try to find and bind in healthy cells, which they thus damage. Antioxidants, on the other hand, have one extra electron to neutralize free radicals, thus counteracting the aforementioned diseases. Today, everyone should include at least some antioxidants in their diet.
Why should I take astaxanthin?
According to scientific studies, astaxanthin is great not only in solving specific health problems, but also as a prevention of various diseases, inflammations, etc. In addition to health benefits, women appreciate its rejuvenating effects and skin protection from UV radiation, athletes love it for its effect on performance and endurance. You can find all the effects in the "Benefits of Astaxanthin" section.
Are the effects of astaxanthin somehow proven?
The effects of astaxanthin have been studied and confirmed by hundreds of scientific studies. Unfortunately, no study has been carried out in the Czech Republic so far. The vast majority are in English, the most interesting ones can be found on our website in the "Scientific Studies" section.
Is Astaxanthin really natural? Where does it occur in nature?
Astaxanthin is an integral part of the meat of salmon, lobster and shrimp. It is astaxanthin that gives them their characteristic colour and, according to experts, their admirable strength and endurance to swim against the flow of rivers and to conquer challenging waterfalls. It is interesting that the salmon trout sold is in fact a common rainbow trout, the meat of which has been artificially coloured with a compound feed. Thanks to astaxanthin, flamingos also acquire their unmistakable colour, and thanks to its presence in their food, their feathers are coloured in pink and orange tones.
However, astaxanthin also occurs naturally in freshwater algae, the most concentrated source is the algae with the tongue twisting name Haematococcus pluvialis. This alga occurs in freshwater in the shallows, in shallow reservoirs that have formed in rock depressions, on roads, rocks or ditches, or in brackish water on rocks on the sea coast, especially in the Nordic countries. In the summer, when the water surfaces dry out, astaxanthin begins to concentrate in the algae due to unfavourable conditions and changes colour from green to red. Astaxanthin helps algae survive adverse conditions and resist damage so they can survive and resume their life cycle when it rains again, even if it takes several years.
Algae used in food supplements is grown in several plants around the world. However, these plants use different cultivation methods using different technologies. One of the most technologically advanced operations is located in our territory. Thanks to the technologies used in the completely closed cultivation process of the Czech company Algamo, Czech algae (hence the Czech natural astaxanthin) has a number of world certifications and its quality ranks among the world's best. Thus, although it is a “farm” cultivation, the algae is a natural, one could say agricultural, product.
How and when to take astaxanthin?
The dosage of each food supplement is always stated legally. In terms of astaxanthin food supplement, usually 1-2 capsules are taken daily depending on the substances contained in the product. We recommend taking astaxanthin products (unless they are recommended for better sleep or soothing) in the morning. We know from our own the experience as well as our customers’ experience that products with astaxanthin boost energy, so they are not suitable in the evening and at bedtime.
Astaxanthin is fat-soluble, so you certainly won't make a mistake if you take the capsules with food. This will ensure faster and better absorption. However, it is not necessary.
Is astaxanthin suitable for children?
Legislation generally prohibits food supplements for children, their sale is possible only after a special approval. Although astaxanthin supplements must include the statement "not suitable for children", foods that naturally contain astaxanthin (salmon, shrimp, lobster) are not prohibited for children. However, it is better to consult a doctor for the appropriate dosage.
What if I exceed the recommended dose of astaxanthin? Can I overdose?
Unlike other active substances and vitamins, astaxanthin cannot be overdosed. Studies on its effects also use much higher doses than those recommended by legislation. In some sick patients, doctors often recommend higher doses, as well as for top athletes in the training and exercise phase. Our body absorbs as much astaxanthin as it needs, and naturally excretes the rest.
Does astaxanthin have any contraindications?
There are no known contraindications to other drugs, however, we recommend consulting a doctor.
Can I take astaxanthin with other food supplements?
Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant with a wide range of effects, yet it can be supplemented with other substances, as it is in most of the capsules we offer. Astaxanthin acts synergistically with other active substances and promotes their efficacy and absorption. Especially in the season of influenza and viral diseases, astaxanthin in combination with vitamin C appears to be an ideal combination to support the immune system.
Is astaxanthin suitable and safe for long-term use? Do you recommend taking astaxanthin in some cycles?
Astaxanthin is safe for long-term use, you do not have to worry about any side effects. There is no need to dose astaxanthin in cycles, but it depends on the reason that led you to take astaxanthin, of course. Scientific studies investigating the effects of astaxanthin also use much higher doses than recommended by the European legislative system. The specific dosage depends on the problem to be solved, whether it is a state of health, sports performance or preventive use. It is certainly not a mistake to increase the dosage of astaxanthin for periods when there are generally more diseases and our immune system needs some support "from the outside".
Does astaxanthin have any side effects?
Studies show very little incidence of less serious side effects, such as lowering calcium levels, lowering blood pressure and increasing hair growth. Studies do not report any dangerous side effects associated with the use of astaxanthin, even at higher doses. Any side effects should usually subside quickly, so there should be no cause for concern. However, from the experience of ourselves and our customers, we did not observe any of the mentioned side effects. The only complaint was the problem of falling asleep, which was caused by inappropriate dosing of the food supplement at bedtime. When dosing in the morning, on the other hand, the boost of energy is desirable and when the dosage changed, the problems with insomnia immediately subsided. Of course, especially pregnant and lactating women, children and people with serious or chronic diseases, or people who are constantly taking medication, should first consult their doctor about the use of astaxanthin.
When I eat astaxanthin, do I change my skin colour? Does astaxanthin colour my pet’s fur the same way it colours flamingo’s feathers?
Although astaxanthin adds colour to the meat of salmon, lobsters, shrimp and flamingo feathers, you and your pets do not have to worry about colour changes.
I’ve seen on the internet that astaxanthin is a dangerous ingredient. Is it really safe?
Natural astaxanthin is commonly used in food supplements around the world, and hundreds of scientific studies have proven not only its safety, but also its positive effects on humans and animals. Of course, this does not apply to synthetic astaxanthin, which is most often derived from petroleum derivatives.
The legislation in the European Union is very strict. Some online resources perceive pure astaxanthin only as a (synthetic) dye or pigment, not as a dietary supplement. However, astaxanthin can occur naturally in some foods - it is the alga Haematococcus pluvialis that contains astaxanthin naturally. This algae or extract from it (not 100% pure extracted astaxanthin) can be legally used in food supplements.
How do I know that I bought a quality product with astaxanthin?
It is not entirely simple, but quality products primarily meet all legislative requirements, provide all the necessary information - such as the content of active substances, complete list of ingredients, country of origin, batch number, expiration date, etc.
As for the capsules or cosmetics themselves, astaxanthin is a strong red pigment, so the products are always coloured red or orange depending on the concentration of astaxanthin. If the products are not coloured orange to deep red, this may be due, for example, to poor storage or it can also be an indicator of poor-quality raw materials. In either case, such product does not contain astaxanthin and a trusted and high-quality manufacturer or distributor will have no problem with your product reclamation (unless there is a storage mistake on the part of the buyer).
On the internet, the price of food supplements with astaxanthin varies in a wide price range, what to follow when choosing one?
The price of astaxanthin often reflects quality. Unfortunately, the astaxanthin market has been adversely affected by Chinese production, which is putting downward pressure on astaxanthin prices. Real quality products then lose competitiveness with customers. Astaxanthin of the highest quality is (perhaps surprisingly for some of you) the Czech one. Thanks to many photos, videos and TV reports, you can look into the cultivation process, and from time to time the Algamo company organizes an open day at the plant in Mostek, where you can admire the technology up close.
Especially with food supplements, always check the origin of the algae. If the raw material is of a good quality, the manufacturer will not hide this information.
Why should I buy expensive supplements when I can buy salmon or salmon trout?
First of all, it should be noted that most of these fish come from farms where, at best, they are fed with mixtures containing astaxanthin, at worst it is some other dye, or synthetic astaxanthin.
However, you would need to eat about 0.5 kg a day of quality wild salmon meat to get a daily dose of astaxanthin. When comparing prices, food supplements are suddenly the cheapest option.
Salmon trout is just a specimen invented by fish farmers. It is a classic rainbow trout, whose meat is artificially coloured through a feed mixture.

What is the difference between capsules that are labelled vegan and "non-vegan"? What do they contain?
Capsules marked as vegan are 100% from plant sources, including the capsule itself. "Non-vegan" capsules have a capsule mostly made of beef gelatine or contain, for example, omega 3 unsaturated fatty acids from fish oil. You will always find everything on the list of ingredients. If the list of ingredients or the manufacturer does not answer your questions, it is better not to buy the product.
I came across astaxanthin in feed for parrots and fish. Why are they fed with such an expensive raw material? Are there such surpluses of this superfood?
Astaxanthin helps fish and parrots to support and emphasize their natural colour, so it is often an important part of feed for these animals.
Astaxanthin in these feeds falls far short of the quality of astaxanthin, which is used in products for human consumption. Synthetic astaxanthin is often used for animals, which is most often derived from petroleum derivatives and its safety for humans has never been tested.
A better option is to add Haematococcus pluvialis algae to the feed after oleoresin extraction. Oleoresin is an oil extract from the algae, most often with an astaxanthin content of 5-10%. However, after this extraction, a certain percentage of astaxanthin still remains in the algae, so it is advisable to use it in animals feeds.
I saw that cosmetics with astaxanthin have an orange colour. Does it colour my face? Does it highlight my age/pigment spots?
Most products available on our market are, of course, developed so that the skin does not colour and the products do not leave marks or spots. The only thing to watch out for is your clothes. Some astaxanthin products stain it.
As for pigment and age spots, there are studies that show the opposite. According to them, astaxanthin visibly rejuvenates the skin and reduces pigment and age spots. The best result is achieved when combining food supplements with cosmetics, i.e. internal and external use.
Can I use Bonaloka and Alife cosmetic products in combination with products from another brand?
The Bonaloka cosmetic line has been designed for maximum effectiveness when used both as a whole skincare routine and separately. If you find another combination of products that suits you, there is no problem. The same applies to Alife serum, which can be used with other products according to your need and preference.Likewise, you don't have to use our Nourishing Night Cream only at night, many of customers with drier skin like it even during the day.
